Hobo Nickels from the 1930s
Hobo Nickels are a form of sculptural art. The nickel was favored due to its size, thickness and softness. Even though the medium was popular amongst hobos due to its cheapness, it is a generic term as it was used by many different kinds of people.
What did they carve them with? That kind of sounds fun…
Except for the fact that I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to deface money
They carved them with rebellion
I had my boyfriend who smokes use matches for a few days instead of a lighter and record the date and time and whatever he was thinking about while smoking.
It’s funny that he quit smoking a few weeks after this project.

I embrace your defects,
To confess, you were my every wish.
I admit, that I will never feel alone.
Once I call, you home.

Close-ups of butterfly wing scales! You should definitely click on these images to get the full detail.
I’ve paired each amazing close-up (by macro photographer Linden Gledhill) with an image of the corresponding butterfly or moth. The featured lepidoptera* are (in order of appearance):
- Madagascar diadem Hypolimnas dexithea (photo by Michel-Georges Bernard)
- Comet moth Argema mittrei (photo by Axel Strauß)
- Sunset moth Chrysiridia rhipheus (photo from Wikimedia Commons)
- Giant Blue Morpho Morpho didius (photo by Didier Descouens, Muséum de Toulouse)
- Rippon’s Birdwing Troides hypolitus (photo by Robert Nash, Ulster Museum)
*Lepidoptera (the scientific order that includes moths and butterflies) means “scaly wing.” The scales get their color not from pigment - but from microscopic structures that manipulate light.
